In the film Walters plays Marion, mother to Rose-Lynn, played by Jessie Buckley. Rose-Lynn's dream is to be a Nashville country singer but as a single mother fresh out of prison, that dream is quite a distance away. Rose-Lynn starts working as a housekeeper for the very posh Susannah who, upon hearing Rose-Lynn’s singing decides to help her get to Nashville. As much as Marion wants to support her daughter, she also wants her to take responsibility for her actions.

Julie Walters is the recipient of four BAFTA TV Awards, two BAFTA Film Awards, a BAFTA Fellowship, and a Golden Globe. She has been nominated twice for an Academy Award, in the categories of Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress.

Jessie Buckley received acclaim for her debut in the low budget British feature film BEAST. The film received ten BIFA nominations last year with Buckley taking the award for Most Promising Newcomer.

WILD ROSE had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival last year, it also screened at the BFI London Film Festival later in 2018 and played at SxSW in Austin, Texas in March. The film is released in the UK by Entertainment One.
