Film Hub Midlands are supporting Wem Town Hall with their Connections film season, aimed at supporting social and cultural inclusivity in older audiences. The support will allow Wem Town Hall to dedicate screen time to more British independent and world cinema.
The stimulating Connections season invites audiences in the ancient Saxon town of Wem and across North Shropshire to experience independent films that focus on the theme of friendship.
Each film in the Connections season is being shown twice, one of the screenings with a dedicated relaxed environment, with the lights on at a low level, film volume turned down, no trailers or advertisements before the film starts and will be organised at a reduced capacity.
Rose, Director at Wem Town Hall has shared the latest details on Connections;
At Wem Town Hall we like to offer you the chance to experience really great films that you might not otherwise get the chance to see locally. The films might be foreign language, documentary, classic or archive, or simply don’t have the big marketing budgets of the blockbusters and deserve to be enjoyed.
Starting in October and carrying through to 2024 our Connections film season highlights five friendships and unexpected connections that change the course of lives. Films that will make you laugh, cry, wonder and cheer. Connections considers our place in the world and how we relate to others.
Just screened:
The Old Oak (15)
The Old Oak is the last pub standing in a village of North East England, and the only remaining public space where people can meet in a once thriving mining community now fallen on hard times. Landlord TJ (Dave Turner) hangs on by a thread. Tensions dramatically rise after the arrival of Syrian refugees placed in the village.
In an unlikely friendship TJ encounters a young Syrian, Yara (Ebla Mari) who owns a camera. Can they find a way for the two communities to understand each other? So unfolds Ken Loach’s deeply moving drama about loss, fear and the difficulty of finding hope.
